The New England Equity Assistance Center (NEEAC) provides technical assistance and professional development to help states, districts, and public schools implement policies and practices that promote access to high-quality education for all students. We focus on issues of race, gender, and national origin equity that schools must address in order to deliver effective instruction and to close persistent achievement gaps.
One of ten regional
equity assistance centers
funded by the U.S. Department of Education, NEEAC serves the Region I states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New
Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The equity assistance centers were
initially created by Title IV of the Civil Rights
Act of 1964
to provide desegregation assistance to state and local education agencies.
Today, the centers work with schools to address a range of equity issues
in the implementation of programs and policies that comply with the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001
.
The equity assistance centers also collaborate with the U.S. Department of
Education's Office of Civil Rights
by helping schools and districts address complaints and violations and implement
corrective measures.
NEEAC is located within The Education Alliance at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. A department of the University, the Alliance has been working since 1975 to promote educational change to give all students equitable opportunities to succeed. It provides applied research, technical assistance, and informational resources to connect research and practice, build knowledge and skills, and meet critical needs in the field.
